(Unit 4) Topic 4: Family Activity Nights

1 Clock Hour of Early Childhood Education

Components of a Successful Family Night

Topic 4 Page 9

Now that we’ve discussed what not to do, let’s take a look at some factors that have proved to be successful.
Picture
Plan early

Begin planning your event at least 2 months in advance. This allows plenty of time to work on the details and to give families ample notice of the event.
Picture
Be creative
This is an opportunity to have fun and think outside of the box. A gym filled with tables and flyers is not a family event. An event that stands out and draws attention is sure to be successful!
Picture
Listen to families
If possible, get family feedback about scheduling, activities, length and more. You may be surprised at the suggestions that they offer.
Picture
Involve father figures
Dads, grandpas, uncles and brothers are often nearly ignored when it comes to planning after-hours events. Consider these family members when planning your events.
Picture
Be welcoming
If you create a welcoming atmosphere and employ friendly staff members, families will be more comfortable attending events.
Picture
Have a sign-in sheet
This allows you to keep track of how many people actually attend your event. This is helpful data for planning future events.
Picture
Have room
There’s nothing worse than a small space with too many people waiting in line. Add impatient young children to the mix and you have a recipe for disaster. Plan and set up activities based upon a larger than normal estimation of attendees. This will ensure that all things run smoothly and there are happy participants.
Picture
Provide childcare
Consider providing child care for younger siblings to make it easier for families to participate.
Picture
Snacks
Provide snacks and refreshments. You can make the snacks themed or just provide a simple cookie assortment. Whichever works best for your program.
