Lesson Plan: Hanging Family Mobiles

Objectives:​
  • Children will create artwork to enhance their sense of belonging in the classroom.

CDA Competency Standard:  
11.9.4b
  • Candidate helps children experience sympathy/empathy and respect for others.
​​B) Discusses diversity comfortably when interacting with children.
Materials: ​
  • String
  • Tape or glue
  • Photos of Family
  • Wire hangers
  • Book: The Family Book by Todd Parr 
Procedure: ​
  • Read The Family Book by Todd Parr to the children in your care.
  • After reading the book, communicate with children about different families and what makes a family. Ask guiding questions such as “what makes a family?” or “how are families different?”
  • Ask families to send in photos of their immediate family members or ask older children to draw their families. Assist children in hanging photos from the wire hangers to be displayed in the classroom.
  • Keep the conversation about families going as you introduce new books about diverse families. Build on the previous line of questioning as new books are used in your program.

  • Observe and record children’s respectful interaction where diversity is concerned.
