A) Encourages children’s social interactions.
Materials:
  • Small felt squares in different colors
  • Sharpie
  • One large felt square
  • Hot glue gun
  • Book: The Name Quilt by Phyllis Root
Procedure:
  • Read the Name Quilt by Phyllis Root to the children in your care.
  • After reading the book, encourage children to socialize about their families and specifically about learning one another’s name.
  • At circle time or another community based time, go around and ask children their names. When they say their name encourage the entire group to say that child’s name, etc. Older children can then write their names on a felt square in a color of their choice. Younger children can choose a color of felt and a teacher can write their names on it.
  • Later, combine the felt squares into a pattern and hot glue onto the larger piece of felt to create a classroom name quilt. Hang the quilt on the wall where you can reference it often.

Assessment:
  • Observe and record children’s social interactions while they learn about their peers.
