(Unit 4) Topic 6: Operation: Military Families

2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Military Families as Part of the Community

Topic 6 Page 2

Community members are the bedrock of society. Each one brings an important piece to the puzzle of humanity.
In some communities military families are more prevalent and in others they are seldom seen. What’s more is the unique set of challenges that military families face on a daily basis.
Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard are some of the branches of the United States military that community members may be affiliated with.
Even without the direct service in the military there are far reaching connections of military members. This includes their immediate and distant families. In addition to the military affiliation there are government workers who are directly employed by the Department of Defense and other such entities. These members are also effected by the military and so are their families.
Recent news and events have brought light to families with military or government connections. Government budget talks and looming shut downs have put many communities on guard and for very good reason. The military has a far reaching impact for many people whether they are in it or not and this can positively or negatively impact many communities. Whether the military families in your immediate community are obvious to you or not, it is critical as a child care professional to understand how to support them.
