Using Literature to Support Diverse Families

2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Family Community Partnerships

Topic 7 Page 2

Today’s world is a combination of ideas, experiences, and worldviews. Children learn about the world from the inner perspective of their family unit.

Children are influenced by the people around them from the very beginning of life. They pick up on social cues, emotions, positive and negative aspects of life, and countless other things. Early childhood professionals have a unique opportunity to value diverse families and to educate other children about those different families. Literature is a fascinating and relatable option to do just that.
Books are beneficial to children of all ages and it is never too early to read to a child. Newborn babies benefit from the interaction with their caregivers as they are read a story. Infants become aware of printed pictures and colorful illustrations and toddlers can begin to follow the storyline with ease. As preschool years approach a child is able to recognize high frequency words and further their language development. Though the cognitive development with these early literary experiences is extremely important, there is a deeper connection to families and caregivers that is developed through these experiences.
